Recall ’94

Recall ’94 is a Magic: The Gathering format built around the cards available by the end of 1994, combining Magic’s earliest sets with a number of historical rules and its own banned and restricted list.

Deck Construction Rules

  • Cards per deck: At least 60 cards, plus a 15-card sideboard.
  • Allowed sets: Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, The Dark and Fallen Empires, plus Arena, Sewers of Estark and Nalathni Dragon.
  • Reprint rules: Any Old Frame reprint using the original artwork is allowed, provided it is non-foil. Revised Serendib Efreet, Revised Plateau, Summer Magic Hurricane and Simplified Chinese Fifth Edition alternate-art cards are also allowed.

Rules

Contemporary Magic rules and errata are followed, with the following exceptions:

  • Paris mulligan: The Paris mulligan is still in effect.
  • Mana burn: Mana burn is still in effect.
  • Life total: A player loses the game for having 0 or less life only at the end of each phase. This state-based action is the last thing that happens before the game proceeds to the next phase. This rule preserves the original functionality of Mirror Universe.
  • Tapped blockers: If a creature declared as a blocker during combat becomes tapped before combat damage is assigned, it deals no combat damage to the attacking creature. For example, a Mishra’s Factory that blocks becomes 0/3 if it is tapped to activate its +1/+1 ability.
  • Chaos Orb: 1, Tap: Choose a target nontoken permanent on the battlefield. If Chaos Orb is on the battlefield, flip it from a height of at least 30 cm (12 inches). If it completes at least one full 360° rotation and lands on the chosen permanent, destroy that permanent. Then destroy Chaos Orb.
  • Falling Star: Choose any number of creatures on the battlefield that are not overlapping. Flip Falling Star from a height of at least 30 cm (12 inches). If it completes at least one full 360° rotation, it deals 3 damage to each chosen creature on which it lands. Creatures damaged by Falling Star and not destroyed become tapped.
  • Ring of Ma’rûf: 5, Tap, Exile Ring of Ma’rûf: The next time you would draw a card this turn, instead choose a card you own from exile or from your sideboard and put it into your hand.
