2024 Old Frame Vintage World Championship
On October 19, 30 players participated in the 2024 Old Frame Vintage World Championship at Tempest Store in Madrid, significantly surpassing the previous record of 20 participants set at the 2023 World Championship in Valencia.
This special occasion brought together many Old Frame regulars. We had 6 of the 7 players who reached the playoffs last year: Elías Úbeda, Pablo Cubedo, Roberto Martínez, Juan Espadas, Óscar Canedo, and Javier Sánchez. The only player missing from last year’s single-elimination phase was Félix Campo.
Many local players participated, most of whom are regulars in the Liga Madrileña de Old Frame, or have played in the league at some point: Juan Manuel Delgado (winner of the second and third leagues), David Aparicio (league organizer), José Ramón Cruz, Pablo Merino, Rubén Cruz, Alberto Núñez, José Carlos de Lucas, Jorge Larrumbide, Juan Arpón, Emilio de Diego, Raúl Torres, Carlos Dominique, Rogelio de los Ríos, and Alfonso Utrilla.
We also welcomed several players trying the format for the first time, such as Jorge Cabero, Roske, and César Fernández (a former top Type 1 player in 2003, who finished second at the massive Open de Madrid in July 2003, just before the Modern era began), all from Madrid, Luis Sevilla from Valencia, and Dave Shandalarian from Alicante.
From other parts of Spain, we had Jaime Cano, Andrés Martínez, and Paco Benlloch, the winner of the first-ever Old Frame Vintage live tournament.
In addition to the Spanish players, we were honoured to have two of the most successful competitors from the Online Old Frame League, who travelled from abroad just for this event: Nicholas Boltuc, who has reached the finals three times (winning once), and Karl Akbari, with an impressive record of nine finals, five of which he won.
Prizes
Every player got an Old Frame die and a Liga Madrileña de Old Frame Power Nine proxy. Also, those who preregistered participated in three raffles: a sealed Traditional Chinese Odyssey Tournament Pack, €54 in store credit, donated by Alfonso Utrilla, and a Gil Sulfuroso playmat.
Other than that, these were the prizes:
- 1st: German Black Bordered Third Edition Tropical Island
- 2nd: Foil Urza’s Legacy Goblin Welder and 4 Foil Planeshift Quirion Dryad
- 3rd: Foil Urza’s Legacy Goblin Welder
- 4th: Foil Urza’s Legacy Goblin Welder
- 5th: Portuguese sealed Visions Booster Pack
- 6th: Portuguese sealed Visions Booster Pack
- 7th: Portuguese sealed Visions Booster Pack
Streaming
The entire event was streamed on Karn’s Academy YouTube channel, with commentary in Spanish from Juanjo Sierra and Vedast Sanxis. Several players were also interviewed throughout the event.
Tournament Structure
Like last year, we used the Spanish Tournament System: 5 Swiss rounds followed by a top 7 playoff, with the highest-ranked player after the Swiss rounds receiving a bye directly to the semifinals. This system discourages intentional draws more effectively than the regular top 8 structure. It worked well, as there were no intentional draws in the entire tournament.
Swiss Standings
After 5 Swiss rounds, the standings were finalized, and Juan Manuel Delgado secured the top spot, earning a bye to the semifinals.
Top 7
In the quarterfinals, David Aparicio faced Elías Úbeda, Jorge Cabero played Luis Sevilla, and Karl Akbari battled Roberto Martínez. Elías, Luis, and Roberto won their respective matches.
In the semifinals, Juan Manuel Delgado played against Roberto Martínez, and Elías Úbeda faced Luis Sevilla. Roberto and Elías emerged victorious.
Both Roberto and Elías had reached the playoffs last year, with Roberto falling in the quarterfinals and Elías finishing second. This time, in a thrilling final match that I highly recommend watching on the stream, Elías claimed the title of World Champion, solidifying his status as a top Old Frame Vintage player, despite only participating in the last two World Championships.
